So lately my laptop has been really crapping out on me. The worst part is when I'm playing my guitars or bass. While I'm playing, the processor randomly will dart up to 96%-100% usage, thus causing my program to skip horribly, sound terrible, and my whole computer lags. There are, however, some days where I can play in peace without it happening, then other days where it is constant and won't go away. Windows Vista 1.73Ghz Intel 1Gb Ram Intel GMA 915 Any idea why its acting up? I'm about to go through the trouble of formatting just to fix this, though I'd rather not install 3ds max, reason 4, cubase, ect all over again.

could you post your specs again in more detail, such as l2 cache, what type of prossessor aka pentium ect.
also im see that it has spikes even when not running amp, when my sits with only taskmanager open it runs around 1-4% no higher. could you also explain what is going on in the game when this happens.

For further specs, just google the HP DV4217cl
It does spike, and I think it's the reason youtube videos sometimes go crappy on me also...

any virus spyware scanners open? if not I would try a msconfig and turn off all startup programs before moving onto a reformat.

I solved the issue 2 ways. First off, I had to disable oversampling, then second, I reformatted. I now encounter other errors, but not so severe. (ASIO is all messed up)

I recently had a problem a lot like this with my Cubase LE 4 Software (Very nice software btw, if you want you can o.b.t.a.i.n it from me) and I can say that this will help dramatically if you have a second hard drive.
What I did to fix it, was put all the audio files the program was using on the second hard drive, and keep the software and most of the vst's on the 1st hard drive. This stopped the program from using so much memory at any given time. IDK what this does to help exactly, but it did, so if you can I would certainly give it a try.
Also, you need to up your RAM desperately if you're running Vista. You should still be able to run your program reasonably, but Vista will use up to half of your RAM at any given time, whatever that amount happens to be, so...

I am happily rocking on Windows XP Performance Edition. No slowdowns anymore, just some problems with an ASIO beta. (which being BETA I think is the problem). It sometimes does a skip and then everything goes like 2 octaves lower than it should sound. Also, in media player, if I skip songs too fast it does a loud static sound for a second. Both issues, I hate, but haven't tried to fix yet.
Guitar Rig 4 is pretty cool actually, I wrote a bad review initially, but I got some cool tones on it in the end. The programs I normally use are Amplitube 2, GR4, Cubase SX3, Reason 4, and Goldwave for minor editing.
