I made a discovery the other day. I kept getting a E68 error my Xbox 360 hard drive, so I took it apart. It's nothing more than a mere 2.5" Laptop hard disk! I tossed out the bad hard drive and am working on getting a spare 60gb laptop HD in there. It's a huge pain, but its way better than wasting more money off to M$.
Apparently, it's $180 for the 120gb 360 HD, when you can by the EXACT same hard drive for 40 on Tiger direct and mod it into the 360 yourself.
Opinions?

WHAT, there using simple laptop hard disks, that's madness..... wel l that's Microsoft for you, makes me wonder how they defrag them, or is the 360 going to get slow to unusable in a couple of years.
But on the other hand, this open up a huge route to pirates, since they could just install the xbox360 game onto the hard drive, hook it up to a pc, and volia, instant fail for microsoft, that is ofcourse you dont need the disk to be present when using the 360 (doesnt own a 360 wouldnt know), then it might be a little tricker with cracking. Just to point out this is hypothetical, i do not support or unsupport piracy in anyway, just pointing out a security flaw in their machine.
btw im quite sure that Microsoft would put some security id checking mechanism on the hd or something like that, so you might need a bit off luck to pull this one off.

Yeah, I still haven't got my 60gb into the 360 yet, this model is a pain. Once I can get my HD converted to FAT file system, all I gotta do is replace the firmware to the xbox 360's HD firmware. Thats the whole key behind it. I'm also starting to hear about ways to mod the 360 without the risk of being caught on live, so I might do that also.

this is exactly how cama was able to rip dlc from his 360. he'd just plug his 360 hard drive in his computer as a slave. pretty cool stuff.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is possible for me. I can't find a clear answer saying if I can use a hard drive other than the WD Sorpio's. All I have is a seagate 60gb.
