I just bought a cheap guitar to learn with, and I was wondering where I should go for good places to learn how to play. I cant afford a teacher, so I'm asking here. I have GP5 on my PC if that helps. Just need a way to learn to play.

I started out by learning marry had a little lamb for the first few minutes. by the end of the first day, I had started to learn smoke on the water(deep purple), good riddance(green day), and other easy songs. I also started learning scales. I tried to do many things quickly Then I learned power chords and chords so I could do good power/normal chord changes. After, on my 3rd day, I learned the power rangers song minus the solo(lol...). After that, I just practiced songs I like. I eventually got down alternate picking after a little while, pinch harmonics I just didnt get at first, but 1 day I just totally understood them(dont ask...lol). I also learned scales. You should learn theory also. I already knew a lot of theory then from keyboard, but I learned more guitar based theory with guitar. Thats what I did. Now its been a year and Im ok(not where I want, but I almost never practice and play like 10 times every 3 months or so, so Im happy). I now just learn songs and practice them till I can play them and I get better eventually. I never really "practice techniques(except for sweep picking). I just learn them and get them better through songs. I should be practicing, since my teacher(I was self taught till this summer)tells me to practice, but I dont(he dosnt notice though ), I just play songs and make songs. I find it a lot more fun.

yes scales are a must. you have to know at least a few scales to make any kind of decent solo. try doing the choruses to iron man, smoke on the water, (as crazyboy has said) and also try the chorus to arials by system of a down. also, you might want to try learning octaves fairly short in because there are a lot of songs (what i've done, by linkin park, for example) that don't necessarily use octaves, but finger positions that are very similar.

You know scales somewhere in you I don't always remember the fingerings for scales(I make my own figurings in my imrpovise solos just by figuring out what sound like, lol, there like different scale patterns mixed together), but I know what the minor and major scale sound like still and I would know in a song if there was an out of key note. I'm sure you would too, since I havn't really heard any out of key notes in any of your songs. Wait a minute...if you don't know scales, how did you improvise the solo in your latest recording? wtf, lol.

I dont know any but I can just tell when something sounds out of place.. thats how i did my solo.. if it sounded good on the backing track then i kept it mind you only took 2 takes lol..

Buy a book that comes with a CD and practice without distortion. Focus in on the little things- finger placement, clean strumming, good timing etc. You need to get the fundamentals right first.

yeah its mostly fretting I'm having trouble with (never thought I'd say this) Guitar hero got me too used to using the whole end of my finger, rather than just the tip. I'm getting better though, and I practice like an hour each time, like 5x a day. I just wanna learn where the strings are without looking, and where the frets are without looking. once I get that down, I plan on building up my speed, and eventually learning the scales. Does that sound like a good game-plan?
Thanks to Dean and my harassing him about doing video lessons (longestsoloever on youtube), he finally did it. though others probably ask him, he helped me out, told me what brands to stay away from, what I'd need to start out, etc. He's been a big help, and as of now, you guys are too.
You should check out his dragonforce, Jordan, and other covers, hes pretty good, adds a personal touch to them. The thing I like most about him is not only is he good, but he's helpful.
Here's his jordan cover: [ytube]s3kagoEh3lI[/ytube]

Wow thats nice, gotta praise killswitch.. and he's doing amazing job on solos. Myself i've thought about learning to play guitar for about few years now, getting GH3 last year helped my obsession a bit, but.. We have an acoustic guitar, its about 25 years old but still playing nicely. ive tried to handle the basics with that.
Oh, to your reply mew: Like you said, its better to start as slow as possible, and gain speed on playing when you feel like it.

That guy is pretty awesome- really clean, really smooth, great sense of groove. Hat's off indeed.
You can tell him that the section at 3:15 is 'chicken picking', not tapping. I guess he probably knows its not tapping but chickin' pickin' is a pretty obscure technique if he couldn't work out what it was. He may have known all this and decided to just tap it, anyway but I think its important to the song to keep that technique in there. He's an amzing player with some really nice guitars at any rate.

Also, another thing is I noticed my guitar sounds nothing like... well any electric guitar I've ever heard. It sounds very acoustic. Is it a preamp thing or should I look into FX software? I like the powerful sounds of electric guitars, thats why I wanted one really (my girlfriend had an acoustic and I thought it was too boring for my tastes... damn ADD). my co-worker told me an amp is all I'd need but since its run through my PC through a preamp I'd need some kind of software, he named 2 but I dont recall what they were.

So you dont even have an amplifier?
If your just connecting to your pc Get GUITAR Rig 3. Thats all i can think off..
if not just get a small 15-25w amplifier for under200$ (thats aus anyway)

Waves GTR 3 is good, Line 6 Toneworks or the gold toolbox plugin, Ampitube 2 (kinda sucks, IMO), Studio Devil Amp is cheap...
There's loads, actually. I like GTR3 the best. However, how are you connecting to your computer? You may get serious latency issues with some sound cards (built in or gamer ones).

just on board nForce 6 sound. No latency issues though as it stands but synthing would add some latency.
By the way HZAC I'm running a MIC800 modeling preamp by Behringer to run my guitar to my PC. Guy at the shop said it was the best thing he had for what I was looking at doing (running through my PC)
EDIT: Guitar Rig 3 works great, thanks for the tip. Now I just gotta buy a faster and better sound card, way too much static on the line-in.
