I thought the meters needed to be moved into a non GH like position? ie, something totally new?

those look awesome! ..... but i agree with sensay, those almost look like they could just as easily be a replacement skin for what we have now

I'll work on creating an entirely new concept of meters tomorrow. Right now I'm thinking just one HUD spanning the top of the viewport and placing all the indicators and stats up there. Including a mock streak counter and a couple other ideas I have floating around in my head. I'll update the first post with a new screen if I have one available.

Don't forget we have the star power meter now too -- that'll have to be in any mockups.

Sweet!
I think a circular multiplier would be better... like 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 2x(SP) 4x(SP), 6x, 8x... and to look less GH-ish, the score on the top of the screen...
When I go back home I'll try learning about Frontman animation...
These Boxes(I don't know how to call that in english) at board sides might be amplifiers... Would look great shaking on every note pressed =D

After about an hour or so of revising, I've come up with a new layout for the new meters (including starpower). There are 2 different views of it with different status of the various meters so you can get a feeling for how things work.

The new placement is looking fantastic! All i wonder is that how easy/hard it would be now to see starpower while concentrating on the notes as the meter is on the top. But i guess halo effects on it makes the job. Ofcourse i have many other thoughts how the meters could look like, but everything can't fit to the default theme, and these does it pretty well.

This mockup looks sweet. The only part that kinda irks me is the SP meter. It looks like its gonna fill up like GH3/WT which I was never a fan of. I like a good ol bar myself, but I'm not sure how close we can be to the original games.

good ones but, make them smaller (just a little) or transparent they will overlay a lot of the "stage"

Agreed. I like the idea, but maybe a 60% translucency (a la Rock Band's singer section) would make that so you can see the meters, but can see the 2D/3D stage as well.

Needs less GH/RB-like notes + keys.

Hey, I'm here to shoot down your idea. :3
Putting the meters at the top of the screen forces the player have to look up and away from the notes to see them.

I'm well aware of this, which is why I'm trying to make the necessary indicators visible from where they are (thus the big glow of how you're doing; red, yellow, green). I'm thinking of new ways to apply it to other indicators but so far it's no dice.

these look exelent, but to solve the above problem, couldnt you just make the board colour change to the appropriate colour of rock you are on, for example when it gets close to failing the board goes red, and mabie a colour change to the lines at the side of the board when you get star power, and use the meters for a more detailed view on how you are doing.

I like the idea of the fretboard telling you what's going on, but maybe not the whole board changing color, that would screw with a lot of nice fretboard art, and probably make some notes hard to see at times. Maybe just have a color strip at the bottom of fretboard indicating rock status, and the sides showing star power like zidine suggested. Also the meters confusingboat has made would look great right under the fretboard, just look at pics above, but look at bottom of top pic (fretboard) and top of next pic (Meters) together, would have to ask callisto is this is even possible of course

Agreed. I like the idea, but maybe a 60% translucency (a la Rock Band's singer section) would make that so you can see the meters, but can see the 2D/3D stage as well. I think you want an 80% not 60%. But this reminds me of a pod.

I'll check it out and see how it looks. Also, my idea for the more player-friendly notification of the status of how good you're doing is a glow off the side of the board. Much like the star power glow, except it will glow the color of the rock meter. And when star power is available, blue chunks of glow will pulse down the sides of the fretboard. When starpower is activated, the sides will glow blue.

What about putting it under the fretboard?

If your post was a response to CB's post above, i'd disagree. Seeing the playing progress by glowing on the whole fretboard would really distract normal gameplay. Considering there's green, red and yellow notes, it would mean you'd see one color always harder than other ones, whatever your progress color is, green, yellow or red. Seeing the progress lightly on a narrow line on the sides of the fretboard shouldn't confuse that lot..
In FoFix the whole fretboard starts to pulse red color then the bar is on red, it always throws me out of the following notes. GZ does that too, but with more light colour and just on the end of failing.

How about the fretboard just "shoot out" a glow of the appropriate color when the rock status changes. If you're in the green it'll shoot out a yellow glow and if you really start to do bad it'll shoot out a red glow and the background (an overlay over the stage camera) will start to get a red tint to it. Eh? Eh?
EDIT: Happy made up holidays! New screenshots up.

Only change I would make is have a full multiplier meter. Instead of going 2x, 3x, 4x and SP, have it do the full 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x and 8x. Looks pretty cool as it is though. Here's to hoping this idea gets put to practice.

Yeah, those screens look quite how i hoped it to look like. When the progress color changes, it could pulse a couple times, and then leave the colour static.
The multiplier meter looks good as it is, but the multiplier counter could be integrated on the circle, rising up behind the digits.

This doesn't have much to do with the new meters, I just didn't want to start another thread for something similar. I'm just letting you all know that I'm working with CJB and derelict in cleaning up the default style (making small changes here and there) to get things to look and feel better. This includes updating textures, default audio tracks, etc. So yep, just thought you all should know.

This is the kinda stuff I like to hear. The more little progress reports the better I say.

Don't we still need new notes and frets before activison will approve? I'd love to see you create the look of new notes and frets. Also if you do decide to Design regular AND star notes.
