thanks for the complement coming from you it actually means alot considering how good your work is and yeah i know its extremely repetitive but i tried not to make it too repetitive by adding the solos and i wrote it because i was gonna add lyrics but now i cant remember what they were gonna be lol and im all for recording them but i have no equipment so if you want to go right ahead id be grateful

Instead of just adding 30 solos in a song you should trying write multiple riffs for one song. no jsut one and a half riffs that are repeated over and over.. It will work alot better.

The one called 'song' in the pack isn't bad but needs a major re-working. I like the riff but I think it'd work better with a more QOTSA kinda vibe to it- bigger, harder drum lines, less solos more melody and definitly a good lead vocal and a more obvious chorus/middle-8 sections that are significantly different from the main body. And don't overuse the high harmony to the main riff.

Ignore my last post I deleted it anyway. I have finally written a song I feel somewhat proud of there's still a few parts that didn't end up exactly as I wanted them ( like the breakdown ) but for once I can say that the overall whole of the song pretty much came to where I wanted it to be. It has multiple riffs on each guitar and for once more than one drum line. I still haven't named it yet as I have not worked on lyrics for it (but next weekend I'm going to my brothers house and am going to write lyrics for it and record some of it; I doubt we'll get it all recorded since I'm not 100% accurate on guitar yet ) well without further ado here's the .rar of the guitar pro file and the .mp3 ( exported as .wav and converted to .mp3 ). www.mediafire.com/download.php?0dzej20dlzmPlease give me some feedback on it if you listen to it.

All the guitar solos are out of key Doesn't change enough, generally; its one feel the whole way though with no drive; its very fatiging Drums need more groove
Honestly, I don't mean to be a dick here, but there's almost nothing about this I can be positive about. Just start expanding your horizons regarding what kind of music you listen to. There's a whole lot to learn from listening to as many different styles as possible. Get some Frank Zappa, some Malevolent Creation, some John Cage, Stravinsky, Aphex Twin, Mum, Explosions in the Sky....
As much as possible and really listen to what they're doing; movement, dynamics, rhythm, sounter-rhythm, 2-part harmony- get technical.

this is a step up from your other stuff. but it's a bit repetitive there at the beginning. and as canped said, the solo's are good... but not in the right key. when in doubt, start your solo's and riffs out on the same fret that you use the most powerchords on, or the one that you left off at when you start the riff. there really isn't much of an explanation for that, i've just found that more times than not, that seems to work out for me. if you wanna know why that happens usually ask canped or hzac, i'd bet they know why. also, a nice backing guitar helps, even if it's really simple. i'm talking about chords. there is a backing track you put in there but i think it is mostly 1-note stuff. also, i've made a general rule that works out for me (well, at least so far XD)... don't record stuff in guitar pro that you couldn't do irl almost indefinately, (do it everytime, even if i asked you to do it 1,000 times you could do it right all those times). this way you understand fully what you're doing before you synthesize it up, and when you practice enough on your songs you are almost bound to run into new ideas or ways of thinking. i mean, obviously there will be a few cases where that may be the best route to take, but... y'know what i mean. lastly, learn at least a little about the music theory side of the guitar, dude. i only recently got really into this stuff and look at my track in the other thread... not wonderful but good enough for novices like me and you. if you just learned a LITTLE of the theory side of guitar you could go places.

@cbj100 alright I will take a look into some of the theory its just alot of the stuff online here confuses me and a lot of that song I can play indefinitely its just whenever I'm recording something that I seem to psyche myself out and mess up the timing and the riffs and solos and everything... as for that last song I put up I actually built it from the ground up with that intro solo. Maybe I should try writing some songs without solos. I'd really like to go about trying to write some heavier stuff thats where most of my influences are its just I have no idea how to go about making the beats for faster heavier songs. If I could come up with some good drum beats I could probably get a good set of riffs flowing out of it its just I cant come up with any beats for them. So if anyone could tell me how to make ( or learn to make ) that kind of drum beats it would be much appreciated.

well, i wouldn't try and make it over-complicated. generally the drums follow a very basic bass-snare-bass-snare pattern and then the cymbals are doing something challenging. or the other way around, with the cymbals just getting hit every beat and some complicated bass and snare combinations. here's a drumbeats doing just that. drumbeat.wmaI made this in about 2 or three minutes. if you listen, there's a bass drum every beat, then a snare every other, and the high hats come in 1/16 (i think) until the mid point. then it's a simple little drum part that sounds harder than it is, with 3 consecutive hi-hats and then a 1/16 of rest. it continues until the ride comes in. the ride is hit on the third 1/16 note, right before the rest each time, then is followed by some open hi-hats leading out of the drum loop. there is only one part in the whole loop where the snare drum and base drum don't do the same thing over and over again. but the cymbals are (or at least sound) very very complicated. (they really aren't for the most part, except the two rides. i have done drumbeats just like this one just lettin ya know.) o and there is a mistake in that last half. when the snare is hit the third hi-hat note should not be. i'm synthesizing this.

Ok but thats not exactly what I meant. I meant some double bass pedal stuff like Lamb of God and All that Remains.

same principle i used up there. double bass isn't hard once you get the hang of it. which means you just try out some complicated cymbal and hi-hat patterns.
but if you mean complicated snare/bass stuff (or simple snare/bass stuf, just hard to pull it off very fast w/o the double bass pedal), like avenged sevenfold, then generally just keep a simple line of cymbals or hi-hat over the snare and bass.
now that i am thinking about it, listen to some of avenged sevenfold's stuff if you haven't already. whether you h8 them or like them, you have to admit, the drummer (and imo the guitarists, bassist and lyricists, also) has got some serious talent.
and this is still a good hint too:
The fact of the matter is even the simplest drumbeats can still sound great if they are put in the right spot. but overcomplicated drumbeats can tend to disorient the listener from the rest of the song.

Yeah ill definitely try to get some harder songs up but for now i finally got a way to record and I just finished recording the song Where were you, because its one of my personal favorites even though its extremely simple and the solos are in the same exact "box" www.mediafire.com/?w5jmmkwjzxn

i dunno. it sounds... okay. Something about the solos doesn't seem right, tho. the drumbeat i guess is okay, but never changes. same with the backing guitar, that plays the chords.
basically with this song, you've got the right idea, but mix it up a bit. most of your songs have one line of guitar the whole way through. that generally makes for a boring song. try different rhythms (by that i mean the rhythm guitar) it might be a bit difficult, but also try and get a buildup...
although handlebars by the flobots isn't a very great/challenging song for guitar (or for that matter any instrument really), they did get one thing right: the build-up. Everything works together to form a light little tune that catches someone's ear and evolves into a massive buildup of emotion at the end.
which brings me to my next point.... try and play with feeling. there is no real way to explain this, and i personally see it as a "bonus" to making a song sound good; so don't get hung up with it, just focus on the other stuff first.
To recap; you've got the general idea with this song (i think), but spice it up. Try to make it so that the song isn't the same thing over and over with a solo on top. come up with some different sections. And i am not saying fall into a pattern. That part is up to you. And most musicians would advise against it. I am just saying that right now the song feels like a promising Intro to a song, but doesn't keep my attention for more than a minute at most, because it is way too repetitive.
Also, out of curiousity, how are you recording?

im using a pedal my friend let me borrow hooked into my computer though its giving me a little too much buzz though that may just be my pickups. deleted last post to not double post... New song I actually think this ones guitar parts harmonize somewhat but i dont have any drums as this is a metal song and i suck at making drum beats for metal songs i wrote this whole thing today so it might not be the best but for just a few hours of work i think it came out nicely oh and only guitar pro so far sorry cjb100 i dont feel like exporting it right now www.mediafire.com/?jzzy31lfjoa

Nothing is harmonised properly.. to be honest it sounds like your play the wrong notes through out the whole song..

Ok then tell me how to harmonize because I can't seem to find a good lesson on it anywhere online that doesn't delve 100% into guitar theory.

what ever scale you are in.. go up 2 notes from the original note and play that note
its heaps easier if you use the guitar fretboard in guitar pro
thats technically not the correct way to do it due to some notes being in the wrong mode.. but its what i do and its definately good enough if u arent obsessed with theory..

No, 2 notes up is a major 3rd; that won't work consistantly as a harmony note and will go out of key with the original. If you're not writing a major 3rd harmony (you'd need to change how the riff is played to do that), the easiset harmonies are perfect 4ths and fifths- one string higher or one string and 2 frets higher that the original riff (like a power chord shape).
Just remember it won't work between the G and B string because they're tuned to a diminished 5th instead of a 4th like the other strings.

Post by hzac on Nov 24, 2008 8:14:59 GMT -5
I dont mean 2 notes up direct from the note.. i mean 2 notes up scale wise.. so if the note being played was 5 and it was a c major scale he would harmoise with not 7 but 9, as it is 2 notes (within scale) up from the original.
Thats how i do it.. but i know minimal thoery

Oh, right. Yeah; that still a major 3rd... not entirely sure that would always work perfectly. My own theory knowledge is pretty sketchy (I'm about Grade 4-5 level).
Like if you're on the 3rd fret and 5th fret on the D string, the harmony part you're suggesting would be on the 2nd and 4th fret of the G string (that's 2 steps up); which would mean that you're in C and you're playing Gb; that can't be right. Unless you're counting the root note as a step and you mean a major 2nd, which still doesn't work.
Unless you're counting pentatonic scales not major scales, in which case you mean a perfect 4th but you don't count pentatonic scales in musical scales because the harmonies are calculated using major scales, always; never pentatonics.
Umm... look, just play the same riff a string higher, or a string and 2 frets higher (like a power-chords shape)... or an octave higher (2 strings and 2 frets) and keep it on the E-A-D-G strings until you get the idea.
