I actually do get my advertised speed. I pay $175 a month for phone, 5mbps internet and digital cable with all the channels (I know its expensive). 5mbps internet is 5 megaBITS, which is what most internet companys advertise, but most assume it's megaBYTES, it's not. The fastest I've ever seen my downloads go (from file planet, fast servers there) was 577kbps. 5000 kilobits translates into 625 kilobytes per second, give or take.
I also know the grid is FAR too fast for the conventional PC today. Not only would it require a new ethernet card, it would also require a faster harddrive, motherboard, and processor to get the full 1.2GB/s. Seeing as how SATA II harddrives transfer at 3mbps and my particular 7200 RPM harddrive can move data within its platters at around 120mbps. That's still 1/10 the raw speed of the Grid. I dont expect us to see the full power of it any time soon, but thats still far faster than downloading at 1000+kbps. Can you even imagine being able to download a full DVD movie in 5 seconds? Supercomputers are the only computers at the moment that can handle such high speeds, but they're pretty much Raid 0 computing, splitting the loads (usually evenly).

hahahaha well i dont have to 'pay' for my internet i shelled out 50 GBP on a very high gain wireless adapter and i pick up the unencrypted signals. In my current flat i reach max of 10 kb/s this is as i am in a sexual interaction between a male and a femaleing basement (temporarily) Under normal service i can d/l at 600 kb/s maximum ever and upload at 130 kb/s maximum. average under normal service is 300 kb/s down and 60 kb/s up. Not bad for free. Oh and as far as im aware its unlimited downloads cos i do on average 30GB a month and never have any bandwith issues. Yeah I "borrow" my neighbor's unencrypted network. I don't think he cares because if he needs to use the web he just kicks my computer off lol. Any other time I can connect and download as much as I want Don't worry, we're getting our own internet in september. EDIT: yeah these tests are inaccurate

100kb/s. It sucks, too. I am on wireless, though, so it has some benefits, too...

The nearest server isn't even in my country (and the test seems to think I'm in London) but I get 1935 down and 236 up. I think its still really wrong, though.
Anyway, I pay about £15 a month. ($30 US. I know you could work it out yourself, but its fun to remind people)

have had up to 700 KB/s torrent downloads, most of the time it averages around 475 KB/s Part of Comcast triple play -- $33/month No limits... that is, until October, when they're planning to cap downloads to 250GB per month; if you exceed they shut off your service for a month.

Your line is capable of transferring data (dowstream) at approximate 2500 kb/s. Dunno why you only ever seen 700...

irrelevant, with that line, normal day to day downloads (ie mediafire) would be close to his peak, at least the 1.5mb mark anyway. As for torrents, idc what speed they give im just pointing out that something is wrong if he has never seen more than 700kbs on ANYTHING. 700kbs would be a 10mb line (slow) whilst hes got a 20 mb line...

As far as real download speeds....I have literally no idea. It never takes long enough to pay attention to the numbers. If i had to guess I'd say that average is 500-600 and sometimes with good servers I'll get 1200... I pay $20 for a promotional period, then it'll be $30 I think... A few other servers So yeah....
