hahahaha well i dont have to 'pay' for my internet i shelled out 50 GBP on a very high gain wireless adapter and i pick up the unencrypted signals. In my current flat i reach max of 10 kb/s this is as i am in a sexual interaction between a male and a femaleing basement (temporarily) Under normal service i can d/l at 600 kb/s maximum ever and upload at 130 kb/s maximum. average under normal service is 300 kb/s down and 60 kb/s up. Not bad for free. Oh and as far as im aware its unlimited downloads cos i do on average 30GB a month and never have any bandwith issues.
Guitarherobot, what are your actual speeds? nd virgin media sucks balls man almost as much as BT broadband lol
<EDIT> I have a backup connection too. This gives me a whopping 3-400 kb/s upload (w00t) but always maxes the DL speeds at about 30/kbs. Strange but useful lol

yeah this thing is so innacurate i get an average rate of about 500kbps and my parents pay about 100$ a month for this digital cable and digital phone from time warner and we get unlimited downloads too but my school has a t1 connection so it gets around 1000kbps average even with the hundreds of computers there which is weird maybe we have more than a t1 cause i dont recall a t1 having that much bandwidth but i may be wrong

hmm, got a 12000/768 line and pay not more than $92 (definately the best offer in my country) since i exclude the support possibilty from my isp. if i would choose to have support, it would be an extra $30 a month. It's actually a 16mbit line i'm paying for, but due to overload on the phonelines, they'll only garuantee 12mbit but when i dl from a good server, i reach 14mbit down, not sure ho much up, but i'll guesss about 200kB/s..

I voted for 501+ kbps because thats what speed my downloads top out at (577kbps is the highest I've seen during a download)

i get about 132kb/sec on good days and have a 375mb/24hr limit. if i exceed i get capped to 14.4k internet (yes, that is really old dial-up speed) for 24hrs. but i can download anything i want between 3am and 6am and it dont count against our threshold. i got 800ms+ ping with my gay [censored] satellite edit: i didnt really kno WTF i was doing when i chose a server, but i actually live like an hour from Detroit, MI. sad to cuz i just ran a test on a closer server to me and the ping went even higher!!!!

that's coming soon with "the grid" network. However hes got a 10 megabit line. If you take that number and divide it by 8 you'll get your approximate download speed in kilobytes per second. If I saw 1 mbps download speed I'd poop myself. mine tops out around 600 (577kbps to be exact). There's also 2 computers and 2 digital cable boxes running from it as well, my actual line speed is 12284kbps.

ok randomly whilst downloading from mediafire i achieved a DL speed of 4000 kb/s which steadil dropped down to the normal 500 i max out on... Does this mean my line is capable of attaining such speeds and that my distance from the router causes this drop? I mean if it showed 4000 and dropped (not that fast either, drops of about 30 kb/s each time...) does that not mean its what im capable of getting?

did your PC lock up for about 8 seconds? if so Windows has a tendency to 'catch up' and read as 4000kbps and drop down to normal. I've seen this happen a couple times as well. However if your on cable you may have just hit the end of the peak time. Dont worry, the grid is coming soon, with dedicated broadband equipment it is capable of reaching download speeds up to 1.66 GIGAbytes per second (or a full DVD release in approx. 5 seconds) It's already in use in some universities all over the world (just over 120 servers if I remember correctly). It was built so supercomputers could collaborate data at full speed... to look for a particle noone knows exists or not (supposedly gives atoms their mass). THIS is the web 2.0 you may have heard about, and it is freakishly fast!

I am already aware of the grid and its not as amzing as you are telling everyone. The realistic time span and what we will actually end up getting is not as good as they say. Im not just hating the idea or yr comments mew i have been looking into this for some time. I cant be bothered to go into all the ins and outs but there is things like the companies this tech will be licensed to and the distribution form the current servers all around the world (at present they cannot wire us all up) and we will be relying on outside investors maintaining these servers for us. Well who wants amazing tech run by corporate numnunts. Look what they did to broadband for crying out loud. Does anyone here ever actually get the speeds they are promised? No and not by a long margin. Yes the grid will dramatically revoultionise the interweb and increase are ability toi pirate software (come on thats what you all think when you see 1.2 GB/s You all think WOW the dvds and games i could have ) But its a way off and you wont see 1.2 GB/s ever Oh yeah and everyone in the world is gonna need a shiny new NIC card for this grid capable of handling the speeds. KERRCHINGG!!! <EDIT> mew my PC did not lock up at all and it was not a misrepresentation as the file itself WAS downloading at that speed. I dont have cable i wirelessly connect to another persons internet hence i dont know anything about the connection (speed tests just lie) and the router (altough unpassworded) gives little away. Any other thoughts? If this is a true represenation of my possible speed i might go and sellotape my adapter to this guys window.....
